Major Insect-pests of Rice and their Management

Stem Borer:

Scientific Name:Scirpophaga Incertulas
Symptoms

The larva after hatching spend one or two days outside and then bore in to the base of stem, feed inside and characteristically cause dead hearts in vegetative stage and white ears at panicle formation stage.

Management
  • Leaf tip clipping before transplanting.
  • Biological control – Tricho cards having Trichogramma japonicum should be applied 5 to 6 times @ 50,000 per ha at 10-15 days’ interval.
  • Apply flubendiamide 20% SG @ 125 g/ha

Armyworm:

Scientific Name:Spodoptera Mauritia
Symptoms
  • Swarming caterpillar attacks both nurseries and main field causing complete defoliation.
  • In severe cases, grazed appearance was observed in the field. Larvae have a swarming habit in groups.
Management
  • Removal of weeds from the field.
  • Release ducks into the field to feed on the larvae
  • Spray Chlorantraniliprole 20SC@ 30 g a.i/ha and fipronil 5 SC @ 370ml/ha in the evening or early morning hours

Case Worm:

Scientific Name:Nymphula Depunctalis Stagnalis
Symptoms
  • Larva primarily eats for 2 days on young leaves after which it cuts, forms tubular cases and remain inside the case.
Management
  • When the pest crosses ETL of two damaged leaves/hill, spray Thiamethoxam 25WG @ 100 g/ha.

Rice Hispa:

Scientific Name:Dicladispa Armigera
Symptoms

The insect makes tunnels through leaf tissue causing irregular translucent white patches that are parallel to the leaf veins

Management
  • Leaf tips clipping before transplanting and destruction of alternate food crops.
  • Spraying of Chlorantraniliprole 20SC@ 30 g a.i/ha

Gundhi Bug:

Scientific Name:Laptocorsia Acuta
Symptoms
  • Sucking the sap from individual grains, which are in milky stage.
  • Individual grains become chaffy
Management
  • Spraying of Neem Azal @ 1% and NSKE @ 1500 ppm

Leaf Folder:

Scientific Name:Cnaphalocrosis Medinalis
Symptoms
  • The larva folds the leaf longitudinally or horizontally by bringing together margins with silken threads and feed by staying inside the tube leading initially to whitish longitudinal streaks giving scorched appearance thereby affecting photosynthetic activity and vigour of the plant.
Management
  • Release of Trichogramma chilonis @ 20,000 per acre (7000 per bigha) starting at 35th day after transplantation and repeated 3 times at fortnightly interval.
  • Spray flubendiamide 39.35% SC @ 0.1%
