Assam is blessed with a rich biodiversity and diverse flora and fauna. This can be attributed to its fertile soil, climatic conditions and numerous water bodies. With ample rainfall and the varied topography, there has been a significant rise to different fishery resources in Assam in the form of beels, reservoirs, wetlands, ponds etc. Along with rice, fish plays a central role amongst the people of the state and is often consumed on a daily basis by thousands of households. This has resulted in the fishing industry contributing significantly to the state economy.
Fishery thus is a priority sector of Assam owing to its significance towards achieving nutritional security, income improvement and livelihood enhancement for millions.
