Polyculture of Giant Freshwater Prawn with Carps

A. Site Preparation:

• Depth of Pond: Stocking tank water level maintained at 1-1.5 m with minimum 0.5 m free board in pond.
• Species density: Juvenile prawn (4-6 cm) of Giant freshwater Prawn (M. rosenbergii) @2000-3300 nos. per bigha ; fingerlings or carried over seeds of selected carps of 15 cm size @ 350 – 500 per bigha.
• Species composition of carps: Silver carp: Catla: Rohu: Grass Carp:: 15:35:35: 15
• Culture duration: 6-8 months.

B. Management practices

1. Pre stocking management:

i) Liming :Basal dose 25-30 kg/bigha.(quick lime)

↓ 7-10 days

ii)Fertilization: Cow dung at basal dose 300 to 400 kg/bigha.

↓ 10 days interval

Urea and SSP @ 2.5 kg and 3-3.5 kg/bigha respectively

↓ 7 to 10 days interval

2. Post Stocking Management:

i. Feeding: Sinking Feed @2-3% with 30-35% Protein content, tray and bag feeding method best. For Grass carp aquatic vegetation need to be supplied.

ii) Liming: Supplementary dose @ 7 kg/bigha/week (quick lime).

iii) Fertilization: Cow dung @ 130-150 kg/bigha/month

Urea & SSP @ 2.5 kg/bigha/month & 3-3.5 kg/bigha/month respectively

iv) Pond Environment Management: During moulting phages to prevent the cannibalistic nature, plastic pipe, hollow bamboo, betel nut leaves, coconut leaves, tires, tree branches etc. can be provided as hiding arrangement.

3. Monitoring & Health care:

1. Netting: At the interval of 15-20 days for checking of growth and disease outbreak.

3. Production: Prawn: 90-120 kg/bigha/year.

Fish: 250-300 kg/bigha/year.
