The state of Assam is endowed with vast fishery resources in the form of ponds, derelict water bodies, beels, reservoirs etc covering about 2.86 lakh ha. In addition, the two major river system viz. the Brahmaputra and the Barak covering about 4820 km with 53 tributaries have formed the life line of the state economy. Out of the total fish species found in the region, 210 species have food value and 19 species are considered cultivable species. The annual fish consumption in Assam is 11.72 kg per capita/year.
