Fisheries Research Centre, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Assam

Fisheries Research Centre, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, is the pioneer institute of fisheries research and extension in the N.E. Region of India. Established in the year 1982, the Centre has been the hub for fisheries research and extension and has been supporting development of fisheries and aquaculture sector of the NE region as a whole and Assam in particular. Following are the major services provided for the benefit of the farmers and other stake holders:

  1. Advisory services for Fish farming, Construction and operation of carp hatchery, induce breeding of carps, catfish and fish seed raising, different fishery based integrated farming systems, low cost aquaponics etc.
  2. Support services in the form of good quality fish seed (Carps, Magur, Kawoi) for fish farmers of the state at AAU approved price.
  3. Skill development training for entrepreneurship through different fish farming systems, Construction and operation of carp hatchery, induce breeding of carps and catfish and fish seed raising, different fishery based integrated farming systems, ornamental fish, fish feed production etc.

  5. Collaborative programmes with other departments, stations and KVKs of Assam Agricultural University, Government of Assam and other relevant agencies.

    The Centre is equipped with the following facilities/ infrastructures

    • Training hall (capacity 65 persons ) with all facilities for conducting trainings, group meetings etc.

    • A model farm for fishery based integrated farming system incorporating poultry/ duck cum fish, pig cum fish, cattle cum fish, goat cum fish, horticulture cum fish model, vermicompost production unit, Azolla production unit, Aquaponics etc. for imparting practical knowledge on fishery based farming system through field demonstration.
    • Good laboratory facility for need based testing of water quality parameters.

    • Innovative Anabas hatchery for practical demonstration on seed production of Anabas.
    • Fish feed mill with 500 kg per hour capacity for practical production and demonstration
    • Poly house pond for temperature enhancement during winter season and advance breeding and seed production
    • Cement cisterns to carry out experimental trials
