Production and raising of fish seed is considered to be one of the most profitable ventures considering the demand for fish seed in the entire north eastern region. Further, stocking the right size in ponds and open water resources has given favourable results in the different agro-climatic regions of Assam. For enhancing the productivity per unit area stocking of ponds with advanced fingerlings has yielded positive results. The principles related to production of advanced fingerlings (Length above 80 mm to 150 mm) will revolve around the pre-stocking and post-stocking management measures with major emphasis on stocking and feeding management. Stocking of fish ponds with advanced fingerlings will also result in enhanced pond productivity. However, when earthen ponds are limited advanced fingerlings raising programme can be conducted in cages or pens in the natural water bodies ‘floodplain wetlands’ referred to as beels. This advanced fingerling raising programme can be one of the suitable remedies for the flood affected areas. The system can be implemented for the areas with low or medium intensity flood occurrence.
